The Terramare group will focus on investigations of the consequences of harbour activities on water and sediment quality. To assess this, heavy metals (a.o. Cu, Pb, Zn), chlorinated contaminants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) will be determined in the Paranaguá estuarine system, both in suspended matter and sediments. The results of our study will provide additional information on pollution in this area.

To achieve this, sinks and sources of these compounds will be determined, i.e. land- and ship-based sources vs. export to coastal areas or mangroves bordering Paranaguá Bay. The development of inputs will be determined at selected sites using dated sediment cores.
