TU Darmstadt Activities
Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD) will focus on the investigations at the entrance to the estuarine system and the navigational channel. The Modelling System TIMOR3 will be set-up, calibrated and validated. It includes modules for currents, waves, sediment transport and bed evolution. The model TIMOR3 is based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). TIMOR3 has been developed since 1992 by Zanke and Mewis and has been used under contract of German Harbour Authorities for several times in the last years to solve problems of currents, tidal levels, waves and dredging and dumping. The system incorporates a multi fractional sediment transport module for bed load and suspended load as well as a module for salt transportation. The bed of the area under investigation is modelled three-dimensional by segmenting it into layers and fractions. From the experience in similar projects the set-up of the model, its calibration and validation, main runs and documentation will take more than one year of the two year program. The rest of the time is needed for field investigations and training. In the end, the validated model of the Paranagua Bay will be made accessible for usage by the Brazilian side.
