UniBW Activities - Morphodynamics, siltation, dredging, dumping

This part of the project deals with modelling hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of the Patos Lagoon, its estuarine area and the adjacent coastal area (inner continental shelf). The objective is to provide indicators for the management of these areas, contributing to the socio-economic development of Southern Brazil.

Therefore it should identify morphodynamic processes which are responsible for the siltation and erosion of both non-cohesive and cohesive sediments in critical areas represented by harbour basins and navigation channels.

The predominant problem is sedimentation. It is necessary to dredge for navigation purposes, which causes a huge amount of costs. Furthermore, there are sand bars which produce rapid bathymetric changes in the main entrance channel of Rio Grande Harbour. Modelling the hydrodynamic and morphologic interactions shall give important information about optimization of dredging – how to minimize the volume and the frequency.

All cognitions and data from this project will be combined in a database containing the hydrological and sedimentological data of the lagoon. The system will be able to use in a web-based Geographical Information System (GIS). In this way a decision support system will be built up to provide measured and modelled results to the local authorities. So it is possible to get a lot of necessary information on demand. If there is any interest in case studies, i.e. of the harbour authorities, the University of Rio Grande (FURG) will be able to model the requested scenario and make the results available online for the client.
